“Before Homosexuals: The Prequel to Before Stonewall” couldn’t have been possible without the help of so many people: our donors, experts, crew, and our local Vermont community. Since so many of our local friends and neighbors assisted in the creation of this film, we have organized a Vermont Premiere screening of “Before Homosexuals” at the Latchis Theatre, presented by The Brattleboro Film Festival.

The screening, presented by the Brattleboro Film Festival, will be held on July 22, 2017 @ 4 PM at the Latchis Theatre in downtown Brattleboro, VT, and will benefit Kopkind’s CineSLAM LGBT Short Film Festival.

We will keep you updated with new details as they become available.

Keep On Marching!

Director John Scagliotti during our impromptu intermission during the world premiere of Before Homosexuals. April 8, 2017

Keep on Marching! Our film was stopped during our World Premiere at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston by someone pulling a fire alarm halfway through the screening. After a brief “intermission” the audience returned to finish the film. We followed the screening with a rousing Q&A session.

Thank You Boston Fire Department for moving quickly and letting us back in!

Sneak Peak Scagliotti vs. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts

While John Scagliotti was news director at WBCN in 1975 he was arrested by the Boston Police vice squad and charged with “soliciting to commit unnatural and lascivious acts.” A jury dressed in festive St. Patrick’s Day attire quickly brought a verdict: guilty as charged. Scagliotti fought that conviction all the way to the Supreme Court of Massachusetts, and with the help of the ACLU, the initial ruling was overturned.

It was a landmark decision for gays and lesbians, and for personal freedom.

Representative Barney Frank at the time told Gay Community News: “This is binding. In effect, it has amended the state’s laws against unnatural acts.… Private consensual, homosexual sex is not convictable.”

Now, more than 40 years later, Scagliotti returns to the scene of the crime April 8th, 2017 at 2PM at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston to present the world premiere screening of “Before Homosexuals: The Prequel to Before Stonewall” as part of the 33rd Annual Wicked Queer LGBT Film Festival. He will be joined by members of the crew and cast for a lively Q&A session after the screening.

Sneak Peak of the Salacious Reputation of Renaissance Florence

As the late Louis Crompton says in “Before Homosexuals” about the Italian Renaissance, “A number of the artists themselves were undoubtedly homosexual.” Florentines had the most notorious reputations about their sexual proclivities. After interviewing Michael Rocke (Author and Senior Research Associate at Villa I Tatti the Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies) and Dr. James Saslow (author of Ganymede in the Renaissance: Homosexuality in Art and Society) the evidence is clear. We offer this sneak peak of our section on Renaissance Florence from “Before Homosexuals”.

Sneak Peak at Dr. Bernadette Brooten’s Ancient Roman Lesbian Love Spells

We are pleased to announce Dr. Bernadette Brooten, MacArthur Genius and professor at Brandeis University, will be joining director John Scagliotti in a special Q&A event after the world premiere screening of “Before Homosexuals: The Prequel to Before Stonewall”. Bernadette is one of the stars of the film, and shares her amazing work investigating ancient Roman lesbian love spells. The finding of love spells disproved what many scholars had taken for granted: that there was little or no record of women’s involvement with same-sex affairs in the ancient world. Bernadette’s pioneering work shattered that assumption and “Before Homosexuals” highlights a number of stories about women and sex from the distant past.
